A Year of Drawing, a year-long drawing project organised by Make Your Mark, aimed to increase access to the arts for people facing mental health challenges and their carers through participatory drawing events across Sussex and Hampshire. We worked with four commissioned artists to deliver the project, they are: Jane Fordham, Jane Fox, Annis Joslin, and Sara Dare.
Funded by Heads On through generous funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England and grants from Chalk Cliff Trust, John Horniman's Children's Trust, Rockinghorse Children's Charity, and the Dixie Rose Findlay Charitable Trust.
The project was made up of three participatory elements: public drawing workshops at cultural venues, pop up studios in NHS inpatient and community mental health settings, and a series of drawing-based recovery college workshops and courses.

Exhibitions
"Great to see the artefacts and narrative about this project in an exhibition. It's difficult to give engaging processes and 'felt' value a visibility. I've heard a lot of good things about Year of Drawing so it's brilliant to see something of it's process, impact and reach"
Gallery Director
The Creative Team co-curated drawings for 3 public exhibitions detailed below. Each exhibition explicitly referred to mental health. Through this the project sought to challenge existing public discourse, expectations and stigma linked to mental health.

Symposium: learning from a year of drawing
how can drawing support health & wellbeing
12th September 2018 - Brighton and Sussex Medical School, University of Brighton
drawing. This one day symposium presented by Make Your Mark, the arts and health programme for Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, in partnership with Brighton and Sussex Medical School, explored the potential of drawing in the context of health and wellbeing. The event considered a range of drawing practices and the way in which they can help us connect, communicate and enhance creativity.
Combining reflection and action, this symposium set out to inform practice directly. The aim was for delegates from health and arts settings to extend their own understanding and commitment to drawing as a tool and to leave equipped with new ideas and approaches.
Below is some information of the guest speakers that we had on the day plus our downloadable prescription sheets that we distributed to our delegates on the day.

Training days
Through delivering YOD public drawing and training events, the project again sought to extend understanding of the role of the arts in supporting mental health and wellbeing.
Drawing for Wellbeing July 2018 Phoenix Gallery, Brighton This training provided a supportive and creative opportunity for participants to develop understanding and experience of how drawing can be used to contribute to both their own and others' wellbeing. Supporting access to the arts for people with mental health challenges August 2018, Cass Sculpture Foundation, near Chichester This session enabled participants to understand more fully the barriers that may prevent people with mental health challenges accessing cultural venues and opportunities. Learning from a Year of Drawing October 2018, Jerwood Gallery, Hastings This session focused on the different dimensions of the project and explored their ongoing relevance to both health and cultural settings. |
Year of drawing collection & Art ideas pack
The Creative Team curated and produced two mini outreach exhibitions. The ‘Art Collection’ with works from CASS Sculpture, Royal Pavilion and Museums and Towner Gallery and the ‘Year of Drawing Collection’ using a selection of participant drawings.
The outreach exhibitions were designed to make artworks accessible to people in hospital settings. These collections have also been exhibited to Sussex Partnership’s staff through 2 innovative screen saver exhibitions. Alongside the YOD collection, a Drawing Ideas Pack was devised and distributed widely within the Trust and to cultural partners. 50 packs of drawing materials have also been shared with services across Sussex Partnership to support ongoing drawing practice. You can DOWNLOAD these in our ideas section. Take a look at a selection of images from the entire project
